In today’s world, when people think of China, the Great Wall comes to mind; when they think of Chinese civilization, the Great Wall stands as its enduring symbol.
On October 19, 2023, Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, then Prime Minister of Pakistan, ascended the Badaling Great Wall in Yanqing District, Beijing, embarking on a profoundly meaningful journey.
Walking along the winding stone pathways of the southern section of Badaling Great Wall, Kakar was deeply struck by its majestic grandeur. Stretching through rugged mountains like a coiled dragon, the Great Wall tells tales from centuries ago.
Filled with anticipation and curiosity, Kakar ascended the stone stairway step by step. Gazing into the distance, he saw the ancient walls and watchtowers, as if they were narrating the profound history and splendor they had witnessed. He listened to the whispers of time, and marveled at the wisdom and courage of those who came before.
Standing atop the Great Wall, Kakar surveyed the surrounding mountains and lands, his heart brimming with profound emotion. Everywhere he looked, he was filled with awe and admiration for this monumental achievement of humanity. In the guestbook, he wrote with deep affection: “Modern heroes trying to cross the Wall, the real one built it.”
At the north side of Wangjing Square at Badaling, Kakar paused to gaze at the China-Pakistan Friendship Monument. Carved from white marble, the 2.3-meter-high and 0.9-meter-wide monument bears an inscription commemorating the enduring bond between the two nations: “The north section of the Great Wall between Watchtower 6 and Watchtower 7 was restored with donations from the government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. This stands as a symbol of the profound friendship between Pakistan and China.” Kakar posed for a photograph with the monument, a moment that highlighted the depth and strength of China-Pakistan ties against the backdrop of the Great Wall.
Since 1965, eight Pakistani leaders have ascended the Badaling Great Wall, reinforcing the Great Wall’s role as a road of friendship.
The Great Wall, this ancient structure, has not only witnessed the profound bond between the two nations but also carries the memory of history and the promise of a brighter future.
